New Scam Impersonates Rental Staff
20 February 2012
Stamford Van and Car Hire would like
to warn customers to be extra vigilent after a series of
scams in the Essex area.
The BVRLA reports
that a group of scamsters in the Essex area are targeting
liveried rental vans and duping customers into handing over keys.
There have been two instances of reception staff at a dealership
handing over the keys of vans parked on their premises to two men
who claimed they were sent by the rental company to collect the
vehicles. On one occasion, the men even made a bogus telephone call
to a fictional rental branch to check on the vehicle registration
number for collection.
More recently, the gang visited a customer's home - presumably
having spotted the liveried van parked in the driveway - and said
they had called to collect the vehicle. They said a replacement
would be delivered the following morning and even produced fake
paperwork to support their story. The rental company was alerted to
the theft the next day when the customer rang to say the promised
replacement vehicle had not arrived.
Stamford Van and Car Hire caution customers against being
pressured into handing over the keys of a vehicle to rental company
'representatives' unless by previous arrangement. If unsure they
should always call the rental branch to check.
